Instead the early 80's Dutch group was more into the groove then into the devil. What we are left with is the roller disco monster before you in this video taken from a game show called Ren Je Rot, which apparently means Runaround. If you dig this one then run around You Tube and check out their 1980 "hit" Sausalito Summernight"
There was a time however when teen idols were not teens. Yes, some time ago record execs figured out it was a little creepy to have young adult men swooning young girls with their ditties about holding hands and hanging round. Bobby Sherman was north of 25 when he released this top 10 hit back in '69. Yep, seems creepy to me. The leather pants aren't helping either. Happy Monday.
It’s not much of a surprise to find two relatively new players battling it out for pop supremacy in this strange year of 2012. I wish it could have been The Black Keys vs The Black Eyed Peas but the latter mercifully didn’t attempt any studio output this year. Hell, even 40 minutes of heavy panting and burping could have easily cracked the iTunes top ten singles chart. Similarly, no one could have predicted the long shot success of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” and FUN’s “We Are Young”. Yes, music fans wanted something “out there” though not completely out of the ordinary. We live in a culture where opening weekend box office results are the sole measure of a film’s success and where television critics fall over themselves to declare any new cable TV show the next “must see” show. In our case Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is the box office success while Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” is our must see show of the year.

Their instant success however didn’t happen overnight. For Psy and the whole K-Pop movement it’s been several years in the making. It’s surprising that it’s taken this long since I first read about Korea’s burgeoning pop scene several years back. What’s even more surprising is that Gangnam Style is sung(!?) in Korean unlike most of his peers who pushed English versions of their songs for US consumption. Even though it had a funny dance and a silly video the most interesting aspect of the song’s success is that it was not a radio hit. Instead it was an internet phenomenon going into the record books as the most liked video on You Tube with over one billion views. We live in different times, my friends. This furthers my point that despite his meteoric “opening weekend” success Psy will have the lasting power of last year’s internet sensation. Remember, “Friday”.

In Canada we’ve known Carly Rae Jepsen since she emerged in 2007 as the precocious 21 year old standout on Season 5 of Canadian Idol. Her third place finish managed to prove that sometimes a nation can recognize a 3 ring star but end up giving the whole circus away to dull eyed cowteens like Jaydee Bixbee and impotent boobs like Brian Melo. It looked like CRJ was destined to tour on the summer carnival series playing small towns like Medicine Hat and Sioux Lookout enjoying modest success and becoming another footnote in the annals of Canadian rock. No, it would have to take the blessing of the Bieber to nudge her into the bloodthirsty waters of female pop alongside conniving sharks like Ke$ha, and Nicki Minaj. She should have been eaten alive, but something happened along the way. Radio listeners and critics gave her a pass much like Kelly Clarkson a few years back. They recognized her tune simply as a decent little pop song that’s sung with no pretension or ambition. It sneaks up on you. “Call Me Maybe” was a summer necessity. You cannot deny it’s tenacity for the hook. It was easy enough to overlook lyrical nonsense like "...before you came into my life, I missed you so bad". Tweens, teens, moms, and even military personnel couldn’t resist it. Who couldn’t? Maybe only death metal fans, but then again…

So what does the future hold for these two? Psy and the whole K-Pop flirtation are finished. CRJ has an even tougher hill to climb. Most likely she will not follow up on this level of success. History will probably be harsh by calling her a one hit wonder or labeling her as the “Call Me Maybe” chick. She will no doubt fall back on the summer carnival series in towns like The Pas and Wawa. Although, I could be wrong on this one. She should take my advice from this summer and hook up with the Broken Social Scene collective and make the 2013 indie album of the year. She should call them, maybe.Happy Mondayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11467887897004893788noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444202823327779065.post-1367088216433071502012-12-10T16:45:00.001-08:002012-12-10T16:47:31.249-08:00Cruisin' With PabloOne day Will Ferrell will stumble on this early 80's puff ball and attempt a recreation not unlike his Bing/Bowie Christmas redux from a few year ago. If you want to make it into the halls of Happy Monday make sure your dance moves are in sync. Not only we do we get cheesy camera mugging from Friends we're also treated to thigh slapping and strutting around in tight red leather pants. They managed a 7th place finish in the 2001 Eurovision contest. Caution: Earworm Ahead. Happy Monday!
The video also features a cliff hanger but stick around for the big "reveal" at the 2:55 mark. Even I didn't see it coming. Released in summer '82, the song reached #16 on the US mainstream rock chart. Happy Monday.
Their repertoire speaks for itself. Considering their pedigree it's a shame they would end up sounding like an amalgamation of every crappy hard rock seventies band of the time. I'll leave it up to you to decide if Mickey Thomas is wearing the world's smallest tie or it's just tucked into his shirt (?). Peaked at #29 (US) in the spring of 1981. Happy Monday.
This time we are concentrating on the mid-90's when it seemed any band could get a video played on MuchMusic.

First up we have The Gravelberrys featuring Paul Myers, brother of Mike (notice the resemblance) who had a minor hit with Wonder Where You Are Tonight. A fine little pop song.

Next up is Pluto with a driving slice of indie pop. The song Paste only reached #46 on the charts in 1996, although I remember the video being in heavy rotation.

And finally, here is Salmonblaster from London, Ont. The song Freeway is quintessential Canadian indie pop of the era. I always thought this song would have more success stateside.
I think someone should have called the cops on the guys from
Dr. Hook for stalking this young lady. If her blue jeans could really
talk I'm sure they would say “leave me alone you creeps, especially you with
the patch and the gold tooth". This abomination rose to #25 on the
US charts in 1982. See if you can count all the ass shots. Happy Monday!

Unlike last year's winner "Pumped Up Kicks" which swayed dance clubs and indie rock festivals, Jepsen has served up a pure Top 40 confection not unlike previous summer popsicles like California Gurls and Hollaback Girl.

My hesitation with "Call Me Maybe" lies in the fact that she can do much better. We've seen her potential back on Season 5 of Canadian Idol, nailing down a variety of songs from Ella Fitzgerald to Feist. She should have won instead of that incompetent creep Brian Melo.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Georgia On My Mind by annanalickus

The jury is still out whether CRJ can parlay her new found fame into something more meaningful than "Call Me Maybe". For now, the song is still a You Tube phenomenon which I guess is as relevant as Double Rainbow and Chocolate Rain. Perhaps what she needs to do is find a good producer, get signed to the Arts and Crafts label and hang out with the guys from Broke Social Scene. In fact she should call them, maybe...
There's a time and place for everything, and in the early 70's big brassy backup bands were the rage. The Ides Of March scored a major hit in May of 1970 with Vehicle and then were not heard from again despite releasing several more albums. More recently Bo Bice performed a competent cover of the song on American Idol. Here is the best clip I could find of the original band.

Over in Europe, 42 countries are putting final touches on their entries for Eurovision 2012. Here is Bucks Fizz with Making Your Mind Up, the winning song from 1981. It is said that the skirt rip off was the coup de gräce for securing the title. Check out this great summary of the event at Rock Town Hall.

All that Peter McCann wants to know is "do you wanna make love or do you just want to fool around". I'll let you be the judge if he's winning this crowd over. Make sure to stick around to the 2:20 mark, when McCann really gets into it. Reaching #5 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1977. Happy Monday!
And it's not just because they are German. They could have chosen a better song. Offensive? Perhaps. But come on people, this was Eurodisco 1979. Happy Monday!
I wore the hell out of our vinyl copy More of The Monkees and tuned in every every afternoon at 4pm. If Mike was the brain, Pete was the soul and Mickey was the spirit, then Davy was definitely the heart. RIP Davy Jones.
Choosing “Friday” over “Someone Like You” would land any sane person in 24-hour observation at the psych ward. But, a closer examination of the two songs reveals a lot of “where” popular music is in 2011. On one side we have a song widely considered “the worst song of all time” up against a song being labelled as “a new standard.” Clearly choosing “Someone Like You” is the safe choice, but did “Friday” have more of an impact?
In late 2010, a 13-year-old Rebecca Black entered an L.A. studio and recorded 2 songs for a fee of $4,000. The financing put up by Rebecca’s mother would cover the cost of studio time and accompanying videos. “Friday,” penned by the studio owners, was eventually chosen by Black herself because her familiarity with the song’s subject. The video and song featuring Black’s heavily auto-tuned squeaky voice and inane lyrics would eventually be uploaded to YouTube in February 2011. The reaction was as swift as it was incendiary. Despite the fact that mindless auto-tuned pop music has been around for nearly 15 years, the song was immediately derided for being instantly disposable and without merit. This did not stop the song however from having over 175 million views on YouTube and making Rebecca Black an overnight sensation. Her quick ascent to fame pissed people off enough that the teenager started receiving death threats. Even I received considerable flack for suggesting that the song was “punk” for its ability to anger so many people. There were those, mostly under the age of 15, who loved the song. The song surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” for the most disliked video on YouTube. It would appear that no song in pop music history (even “Disco Duck”) has found itself under such intense derision and polarization.
But, we’ve been here before. Aside from the aforementioned “Disco Duck,” Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” and Los Del Rio’s “Macarena” ran into quite a resistance from music fans and critics. But those were novelty songs. “Friday” was a genuine attempt at the pop charts. Which I guess, amplified the hate. And for once it seemed everyone’s sense of good taste was immediately challenged. The public needed a good mouthwash to erase this bad-taste. Enter Adele.
The third single from her sophomore album, 21, was the antiseptic. It’s a rare feat for a song to cross over, not only through age, gender and racial divides. “Someone Like You” managed to stir something in fans of classical, hip and hop, and country. The song has a certain familiarity and instant classic feel highlighted by Adele’s “well beyond her years” voice and sparse instrumentation. While the lyrics are not too far away from Taylor Swift’s diary scribblings, the delivery is genuine and untimely. You get the feeling like the song has always existed. It doesn’t hurt that Adele has an unmeasurable voice so rich in texture and soul, that she has no contemporary and is immediately etched in rock alongside the voices of Tina Turner and Whitney Houston. The downfall of this “new standard” is that every contestant on American Idol and X Factor will give the song the old college try with failed results. I would hope that the producers of these shows would forbid anyone from attempting this song, along with “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Piece of My Heart,” and “Natural Woman.” It’s also significant and fateful that Adele would surpass one her idols, Amy Winehouse, in the same year of that singer’s untimely death.
It is a near certainty Adele will rack up quite a few Grammys and Best of 2011 awards, and deservedly so. In the long run, “Someone Like You” will be remembered more than “Friday.” We should, however, thank Rebecca Black’s “Friday” for setting the bar so low as to allow Adele to reach so high.Happy Mondayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11467887897004893788noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8444202823327779065.post-16390707548624802902011-12-16T18:50:00.000-08:002011-12-16T18:50:14.915-08:00A Roastin' Good ChristmasLet's make this a Christmas to remember....by surrounding ourselves with creepy looking mannequins. Double Dutch Bus was a minor hit in the early 80's, but Smith's style of swapping syllables in his phrasing for "iz" or "izzle" would go a long way influencing many rappers, most notably Snoop Dog. Enjoy.
